Read the price terms
Do not automatically add a VAT percentage to a consumer price that already includes applicable VAT. Tesco’s inspected grocery terms state that prices include payable VAT unless otherwise stated,and that delivery is separate. This is the basis for reading its selected £5.95 guide price; it is not an invitation to add a generic tax rate to every line.
Separate VAT from delivery
Waitrose’s inspected online shopping terms also state that its site prices include any payable VAT. Its £1.45 and £2.50 consumer quotes therefore do not invite an automatic extra VAT percentage. This does not establish a VAT invoice or recoverable business tax. Any genuinely additional charge still needs exact checkout evidence.
Keep unknown charges unresolved
Suppose your confirmed transaction has no extra tax charge beyond the displayed inclusive prices. Enter an explicit zero for additional tax in the ledger,and enter the actual delivery separately. If you do not yet know an extra charge,leave it blank; the tool withholds a full total rather than quietly substituting zero.
Check a trade quote independently
Before paying,compare the basket breakdown with the retailer’s current terms and invoice. If an item is explicitly ex-VAT,do not relabel it as inclusive or reuse our consumer observation. Keep the purchase currency GBP and record the exact charge basis. The ledger adds entered pence; it does not infer tax liability or turn a guide price into a final bill.
